Members of SPPTA have the opportunity to become certified with MTNA. This is a great opportunity for teachers who teach private lessons, as well as those who teach group lessons.
To promote excellence, SPPTA encourages its members to become Nationally Certified Teachers of Music (NCTM) through our parent organization Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). Both the music teachers who prioritize meeting this standard and the public who engage with the music teaching profession benefit from certification. Certified music teachers receive distinction and recognition which has the potential to recruit new students and increase one’s earning power. For those seeking music lessons, certification helps identify quality music teachers in their communities.
MTNA’s certification program is based upon a set of five standards defining what a competent music teacher should know and be able to do; including: writing a philosophy of teaching, writing analyses of specific teaching pieces, and submitting video files of the applicant teaching a student at various times throughout the preparation of a piece. For specific details and requirements, please go to https://certification.mtna.org/Certification/Get_Certified/Get_Certified.aspx
To both applaud SPPTA members who successfully complete the certification process and to help defray the cost of the certification application, SPPTA offers $100 to up to 5 newly certified members per year. If newly certified members who are granted SPPTA’s rebate also receive the rebate offered by MMTA (https://mnmusicteachers.com/member-certification/) the entire cost of the certification application fee has the potential to be recouped.
To apply for the rebate or to request a mentor for the certification process, please contact SPPTA’s current president Elsa Mathews elsa.beth.mathews@gmail.com.
